Zipporah Camille Thompson

Artist Statement Submitted 2017

Through amorphous forms, the hidden mysteries of dream worlds, the unknown, and the unconscious are examined.  Disparate materials with heightened tactility are mixed together to create hybrid, mythical landscapes. By navigating the uncharted, mystical territories of the sublime and the surreal through dissipating and catastrophic forces, identity, self, and otherness are explored.
Foraging for materials around me, I am drawn to collecting fragments and objects, and assembling them to recreate the whole. Artifacts of the arcane fuse together past, present, and future. The collagist, patchwork nature of my practice is an effort to reconstruct narrative, to recollect wilderness, to reconnect with the physical environment, and to rekindle ties to the ancestors.
Ritual, alchemy, chaos, and metamorphosis are key to understanding both the objects themselves, and also in the particular processes used to create these objects, by way of wild weaving, fired clay, paper making, & drawing.
