Vanessa Diaz

Artist Statement Submitted 2015

The valuation of the domain is continually assessed by routine behaviors and habits; a chair with the arm rests worn down, sofa cushions sinking from body weight, scuffmarks on the front door, stains, scratches… I use familiar objects, which once offered comfort, shelter and function to initiate a context of the unknown. Through site-specific installation, sculpture and video my work explores diverse approaches to customizing architecture, nomadic definitions of boundaries and various indicators that define personal territories.

Through anti-conventional associations of home décor, my practice examines strategies of survival as a method of claiming space within domestic environments. In certain combination and altered positions, these common things can appear as foreign entities, distorting conventional perceptions with unstable and unpredictable physical circumstances.
