Artist Statement Submitted 2015Turner explores the transformative possibilities of feminist materials. Her current work transforms recycled textiles into paintings.
Her process synthesizes abstract painting with women’s work. Hand dyed layers of ribbon, clothing and bedding are translated into brushstrokes, drips and washes. Each mark is sewn onto a hand-woven foundation or fixed in resin. Her works are equal parts art and heirloom.
The compositions evolve from partnering decorative materials with destructive agents such as fire, storm systems and heartbreak. Oftentimes, stories of tragic heroines are re-imaginied and extended so that the subject is absorbed by a turning landscape. The weather becomes a feminine force.
Turner has collaborated with several southern female artists to create video and photographs.
