Tom Richard

Artist Statement Submitted 2016

My work addresses issues of history, making history, identity, and making identity through use of images of toys with acts of painting alluding to specific art historical references.

Subjects (such as Cowboy and Indian figures, superhero dolls, army guys, rubber ducks) are combined with art history references, optical illusions, chaos theory, and organizational theory diagrams. Recently (dangerous) images of bacteria, viruses, and germs have been added as image choices.

The methods of painting spaces and color choices have “serious” historical references to very specific artworks while the subject matter includes “fun” images of toys from my childhood. My intent is to combine grand themes from art with the sometimes playful, sometimes scary, sometimes perplexing images that form individual and communal experience of identity and history.
