Tom Nakashima

Artist Statement Submitted 2018

My life has been plagued by painters block. Mostly, I wander about searching for something that strikes me as profound enough to produce a painting. If I see something that raises hairs on the back of my neck - - that's usually it! The source is never the same -- a Giotto, a Picasso, a word, a novel or nature may be the catalyst. Most of my work is made of old ideas, salvaged and restored for a new purpose. There are three things that create most of my paintings - - two of the three are usually from my past. John Polkinghorne said something about novelty occurring in the places where chaos and order linger side by side. So I try my best to walk that edge - - always risking the creation of a painting that borders on bad.
