Ted de Clercq

Artist Statement Submitted 2018

Oscar Wilde sold the world on “Art for Art’s Sake” and the invention of the camera made much of artists’ work obsolete. Art lost connection to its historic goals. Previously, painting was used to inspire religious zeal, record history and explain scientific thinking. Art went beyond simple emotional responses to war, illness, beauty and color. My paintings are figurative, realistic ,sometimes surrealistic and meant to initiate viewer’s curiosity for meaning behind the images, the work is based on scientific facts, conveniently omitted from many accepted scientific theories. The work does not deny the Earth is warming or that the continents are moving but offers explanations based on proven facts that predict outcomes far different from generally accepted thought.
