Artist Statement Submitted 2019
I have been living in and photographing the American South for over a decade. The main areas have been Tennessee and New Orleans, and the area in between. I primarily use portraits to explore how people relate to a place and the landscape. For the bulk of years, I have focused on the rites and rituals of free time. In Tennessee, I photographed re-enactments, parades, and the Redneck Olympics. In the small towns around New Orleans, I have been photographing the festivals that celebrate industry, like the Rayne Frog Festival and the Shrimp & Petroleum Festival.
