T.J. Dedeaux-Norris

Artist Statement Submitted 2019

Over the last ten years I have built my career in an interdisciplinary practice of self-authoring: a way of exploring complex narratives about identity through the performance and persona. Early on, I received significant recognition for my work through inclusion in Radical Presence: Black Performance in Contemporary Art, which was curated by Valerie Cassel Oliver and debuted at The Contemporary Arts Museum, Houston. I have continued to build on this initial success by expanding the possibilities for my work, which now encompasses painting, video, photography, music, performance, and installation—an ecosystem of forms that create the world of my characters and alter egos. This approach gives me the ability to stay one step ahead of both my own limitations and entrenched discourse. I have an MFA from Yale University, BA from UCLA, I'm a 2019-2010 Pollock Krasner Foundation Fellow grantee and a tenure-track professor at the University of Iowa.
