Artist Statement Submitted 2014
I am a painter, illustrator and children’s-book-maker with a specialty in narratives and storytelling. Growing up in Tennessee and Mississippi, my family life revolved around gossip, cautionary tales, jokes, and performances of all kinds-essentially the telling of good stories. I have used these skills of being a constant performer in all aspects of my life, and am currently exploring this “need for an audience” in my current painting series, in which faces stare back at the viewer in various states of amusement, boredom, distractedness, or engagement. The faces look at us, as though they were reviewing a painting. This work questions how people look at art, and how we as artists react to those judgments. Other recent work includes a large commission by the Milwaukee ballet to do a public installation of large paintings about dance.
