As a furniture maker, I believe it is fundamentally important to understand the history and traditions of furniture making, and the key role of wood, as a material, in this history. But it is important to remember that furniture making and woodworking are not mutually exclusive. To highlight this, I wanted to eliminate wood entirely from my most recent body of work, entitled Rust Never Sleeps, and instead recreate classic furniture designs completely out of painted and rusted steel. From a distance, the pieces look as if they can be simply antiques, with chipped paint exposing bare wood, but upon closer inspection viewers realize that the bare wood is actually rusted steel. My hope is that this trickery, along with humorous titles, will allow people to view and experience furniture in a new light.
