Artist Statement Submitted 2014
My recent work examines incentives, role modeling, and identity, along with notions of beauty, and artifice. Through the intersection of text, image, low-brow aesthetics, my work questions our complicity in and responsibility for the world. My process often begins with word games and thematic assignments in which I attempt to translate these words or phrases into a cohesive visual construction. In my earlier work I was solely concerned with traditional, figurative painting, as my work has evolved, I've become interested in juxtaposing media, materials, and mark making with traditional modes of painting to create complex compositions that vary from a few layers of paint to upwards of 12 layers of paint.
