Sally Mankus

Artist Statement Submitted 2015

This mixed media and sculpture incorporates domestic items, primarily items used in the ritual of preparing and serving food. Some works have evolved from a unique process of lifting rust, carbon, and markings from charred surfaces ? mainly bakeware ? with acrylic polymers to create acrylic skins. These skins may stand alone or may include images from pigmented inkjet prints and photocopies. Found objects are used as components, finished works, and also as substrates for images, linen, lace, mirrors, paint, graphite, and other materials. The viewer is invited to examine that which is and has been experienced on a daily basis. Objects and imagery take on layered and diverse meanings through time, history, context and interpretation.
