Pete Schulte

Artist Statement Submitted 2017

Works on paper are the cornerstone of my creative practice, which includes the integration of sculpture, site-specific and curatorial activities. The objects at hand employ a quiet geometry, nuanced surface treatment, and subtle use of color. They are rarely predetermined, usually arriving through the act of improvising and revising, with one work often begetting the next. The thin strata that exists between presence and void, figure and ground, image and object, longing and loss, is the space that my art aspires to occupy. Whatever form it takes, the work is an earnest attempt to share this space, to provide a moment of pause within a culture that is relentlessly negating the quiet and contemplative.
