Pete Schulte

Artist Statement Submitted 2016

Drawing is the cornerstone of my practice, which includes the integration of sculpture, installation, and curatorial activities. The objects at hand employ a quiet geometry, nuanced surface treatment, and subtle use of color. They are never predetermined, but arrive through the act of improvising and revising, with one work often begetting the next. I utilize the language of abstraction as a carrier of meaning and means by which to explore and speak to facets of the culture within which the work is entrenched. The thin strata that exists between presence and void, image and object, longing and loss, is the space that my art aspires to occupy. Whatever form it takes, the work is an earnest attempt to share this space, to provide a moment of pause.
