Artist Statement Submitted 2018
The 1858 Prize would support me in launching an ambitious body of two and three-dimensional work that asks the viewer to slow down and consider the question, “what do we want versus what do we need?” Without passing judgement on this subject, I provide visual information for the viewer to consider what in life has the most value, what we need to survive, and what we leave behind. The freedom to explore this theme in a wide variety of ways and materials is essential to my work. I greatly enjoy the process of design and fabrication, although I am not defined by method or material. My work is diverse in size and medium, and when shown together, is unified by the concept of self-reflection, a curiosity about one’s wants and needs and how these drive our decisions and shape us as people.
