Artist Statement Submitted 2018As a kid I was dazzled by the the Riace Warriors and the Treasures of Tutankhamun. I saw them as amazing and mysterious. Although historians can tell us many interesting facts about these ancient works, what impressed me was the wonder and awe I experienced as a viewer.
These likenesses are of some of my friends who sat very still for an hour while I took casts of their faces. The headdresses of cement and rebar were placed in the Wadmalaw Sound for two years as the barnacles and oysters grew. Over the next three years I cleaned and prepared the headdresses and bronze faces for display on their steel stoups.
These are the facts about this work, and when they are seen, I hope the viewer will experience some of the wonder I had as a child when I saw the ancient sculptures.
