Melissa Sommer

Artist Statement Submitted 2014

If the only evidence that I exist are these subjective thoughts, then do I truly have an objective form? My work tries to “gaze upon” this subjective form of self through reflecting what surrounds it, i.e what lies below the skin. I turn to hand rolled coils and layers of film to mimic my reactions to this study through abstract depictions of mythical sirens. Through the creation of these sirens I have “heard” their song of the true nature of truth in which it lies, conceals, and yet reveals.
