Artist Statement Submitted 2014

Spiritual YaYa is a peak behind the veil shrouding the spiritual mysteries of New Orleans and the region. People visiting can feel the unique energy of the area but have a hard time grasping what they are experiencing. What they are sensing is generations of community traditions and heartfelt rituals still alive and thriving in the present moment.

This series is a journey of spiritual tourism through New Orleans and Southern Louisiana. The documentary starts with images of mainstream events such as Mardi Gras, St Joseph’s Day and Bonfires but then digs deeper into the underground of smaller communities such as Voodoo, Santaria, Pagens and Orisha.

This work-in-progress is not a exposé of darkness but rather a celebration of the various communities in Southern Louisiana acknowledging spirit.
