Artist Statement Submitted 2015

These installations are constructed of small paintings that I create each day inspired by the direct experience of the landscapes I travel through on a regularly, mainly those near the roads and highways around Columbia, SC. The edge of a highway is a strange intersection of nature and culture with a wealth of potential painting subjects. We all move so fast in our culture that we don’t see the world in the same detail that people did before modern transportation came along. Each painting is a response to the experience of these places – the atmosphere, color and light of the moment, so that the full installation is a visual map of the experience of place, capturing the drama of the passage of time over a very, almost banal subject.
