Artist Statement Submitted 2017
While growing up in Columbus, Georgia, I was drawn to the lively interaction of color found within Eddie Owens Martin’s environment "Pasaquan" and Alma Thomas’ paintings. Also, my great-grandmother's quilts fascinated me. All of these artists used color as a structural element, and their works of varied media inspire me to create art from a wide range of materials. I explore color through the construction of wooden paintings, the weaving of woolen tapestries, and the painting of large scale murals. Across media, I use color to create rhythmic structure.
