Marjorie Durko Puryear

Artist Statement Submitted 2014

The concept of my collaged textile art is linked to everyday humble, often humorous moments. My intention is to transform mundane remembrances of everyday life through my own interpretive narrative compositions, enhancing the inherent beauty of each found object and evoking a viewer’s playful curiosity.

I use found handkerchiefs and re-purposed cloth collaged with digitally printed images and fragments of found handwritten letters and notes. Merging the found elements I create work that speaks about sentimental connections and personal introspection.

The internal beauty and spirit of each historic re-purposed element, each carrying its own ambiguous history, is contextualized, then heightened by handsewn embellishment. My work is always respectful of fine craft and refined design skills.
