Lynda Frese

Artist Statement Submitted 2019

My work looks at the ethical and spiritual dimensions of our relationship with the natural world. In my photography I often focus on world heritage UNESCO sites and places of wilderness. My work comments on the culture and history of these ancient sites: their genius, their values, and the human settlement in nature. As a collage artist I use imagery to invent new contexts, play with historical relationships, and subvert hierarchies. My practice is influenced by the art of prehistory and early Renaissance painting; I borrow compositions, palettes, and spiritual themes from these artists, utilizing the vernacular iconography of myth and religion to speak about the environment. I paint over the photo collages with egg tempera using pigments from earth sites that have been used by artists continuously. Each color has unique properties and adds its own particular history and resonance.
