Throughout the history of art, from early cave paintings to the subconscious explorations of the modernists and the quest for authenticity of the post-modernists, the search for answers to the inexplicable, the metaphysical, through visual representation has been an ongoing compulsion and one that defines my practice. I choose to approach these timeless questions through the use of charcoal. Carbon reflects an endless cycle of birth and death that manifests in various forms yet remains a constant reality. In the fast-paced, electronic world we live in, slowing down to look at subtleties in mark and craft and contemplate images that do not directly correlate with topical issues helps to situate the Self within this particular existential plane, allowing a moment of reflection that may realign or reinvigorate your approach to living.
