Artist Statement Submitted 2016
My work engages with the flow of materials, natural and manmade, and their cycles of use, disuse, and reuse. My process and philosophy come from African American traditions of making do and respect for the integrity of all things. I seek new ways of imagining and ordering the real and the found, in any possible medium, including assemblage, painting, drawing, printmaking, and computer-generated images, as well as spoken-word performance and original musical compositions. My earliest works were carved memorials to deceased relatives, and I subsequently built an outdoor art environment containing thousands of artworks. No matter which ways my work moves, I maintain my original impulse to honor individuals and their struggles, and a human dimension to even the most abstract work.
