Artist Statement Submitted 2020
Through abstraction, I navigate boundary and space within the human condition. I communicate through painting, collage, audio, and moving image. In painting and collage, inspired by Nihonga, I use precious natural and synthetic materials that are subjected to trauma. These works of art express emotive color fields that balance tumult with delicacy. By excavating peace and conflict narratives rooted in our physical, spiritual, and psychological states I seek to deconstruct perfunctory systems. I am critical of superficial realities and systematized constructs that attempt to marginalize the delicate and complicated nature of our human condition. I propose spaces that nurture healing and regeneration. Hope is offered within spaces of adversity. Storytelling is an important part of my African American heritage. Within the context of narrative, through research, dialogue, and serendipitous interactions I explore human interconnectivity.
