Artist Statement Submitted 2018Painting
My 30+ years of artistic practice continue the goal of simple expression, where paint is distilled into form, line, color, and space without regard for identification. Recent works reference pattern studies and abstracted objects placed into still-lifelike arrangements on flattened color fields. Each work is an exploratory process of adding and editing until a desired level of intention and randomness is achieved.
My work in 3-dimension began around 2007, out of a restlessness with the limitations of paint. Wood, metal and plaster are my preferred mediums, and I eschew a formal approach, opting for a “hand-built” object that doesn’t try to disguise the raw material.
Stylized shapes and related spaces are traded between the 2 and 3-dimensions.
