Kimberly Winkle

Artist Statement Submitted 2014

Employing traditional furniture making techniques and materials, I build
forms and structures that simultaneously nod towards history and
modernity. My furniture forms are inspired by simple historical furniture
formats, such as Shaker design, however the surfaces are activated
through expressive use of color and line. My interest lies in the pursuit and
potential of the medium as an expressive device. I use hardwood, paint,
and graphite to create my works. This painting is not an act of irreverence
for the material; instead I am interested in realizing its potential as
something other than its naked self. The resulting forms speak a Southern
vernacular combined with a modern sensibility. This marriage works to
celebrate and maintain decorative arts traditions and craft-forms while
also working to bring modern day relevance.
