Artist Statement Submitted 2019Each one of us is the sum of our ancestors, our beliefs, memories and experiences. In my southern African American pattern series I fragment my subjects to depict these many layers.
My technique is to first scrape paint on to the canvas in abstract shapes using putty knives. Using these random shapes, all fabric is then hand painted using various forms of inspiration from modern day designs to west African symbols. Oil based skin tones are then brushed in leaving the ghost images of these shapes appearing underneath . Out of this chaos of patterns emerge portraits that give a hint into the subjects past struggles and personal life stories.
