Katya Tepper

Artist Statement Submitted 2017

I’ve been thinking about gut feelings and picture making as forms of non-verbal communication. Using simplified shapes and material gestures, I incorporate sculptural forms related to the body and digestion, such as ceramic bowls, into large-scale mural installations. I view the normally passive absorption of one’s environment as another form of digestion. With this metaphor in mind, I seek to activate the supposedly neutral white walls of an art-viewing space by quoting from the languages of painting, decoration, and display. The reverberation between the three-dimensional sculptures and the two-dimensional murals mimics the fuzzy vibration between tactile and psychological perception. My exploration of these ideas has played out in a linear progression of experimental installations, each becoming more complex than the last.
