Julia Morrisroe

Artist Statement Submitted 2019

Icons and Monuments evolved from research conducted after the White Nationalists attack in Charlottesville, the visit of Richard Spencer to UF and the removal of a confederate monument from the county courthouse. This project examines the purpose of public monuments and who they serve. With over seven hundred monuments still standing in public spaces I considered how a monument could be repurposed or reimagined or transformed into something new, how its origin could be embedded in a painting and be transformed into a new, critical, examination of our history.
