Artist Statement Submitted 2016
I am a Cuban artist, who moved to Miami in 1993. I began my career in Cuba around 1976, immediately after finishing my studies in visual art. From that time on, my work has consisted of a very personal interpretation based on my studies of tribal art, anthropology, mythology, philosophy, and varied traditions. My principal approach has been towards Amerindian and Afro-Caribbean traditions, which I have incorporated and interpreted into a contemporary vocabulary. My work has consisted in the search for archetypes around the world and highlighting their permanence in the present. Using the methodology of an anthropologist I have done different “field works” in North America, South America, the Caribbean, Africa, and Asia to have a first hand experiences with traditional cultures, receiving a direct influence from these groups, which I then use to infuse and elaborate my body of work in an intent to rescue their knowledge.
