Jonathan Campo

Artist Statement Submitted 2018

I make mixed-media paintings that celebrate and satirize the absurdity of a mundane, contemporary American experience. I’m fascinated by how the earth is increasingly a place for little else besides us humans and what we consume. I want my work to not only draw attention to the strange vulgarity of day-to-day consumption, but to embrace and even celebrate the undeniable humor of this ubiquitous behavior.

My process is a mix of painting and collage. I combine acrylics with found detritus which may consist of photographic elements, fabrics, paper media, etc. The resulting paintings possess organic, chunky, tactile textures which I use to reinforce the physicality of waste – an unexpected endpoint for discarded, ephemeral materials.
