"Borne of Blood and Air" is a response to the distinct sense of detachment I have always felt from both sides of my extended family. Nearly all my father’s side is scattered across the country. My mother’s parents and many of her relatives died before I could really remember who they were. All I have are hundreds of photographs of who these relatives supposedly were. I know that there is no way I could meet many of them in this lifetime. The weaving of past lives onto my person and onto places where both they and I have walked serves as my effort to create a physical connection between myself and my ancestors. My deliberate and calculated deconstruction and reconstruction of portraits and old family photographs, by weaving and other methods, results in works where multiple images compete for attention, often bordering on abstraction. Through simultaneous existence, all of the printed, cut, folded, and woven faces of those that came before me are linked together.
