The Carolinas have long been a hotbed for professional wrestling and while the WWE has taken over the national stage you can still see old time wrestling in Charlotte, Spartanburg and the Hanahan Rec Center.
When I was a boy, I used to sit with my grandfather and watch wrestling on tv and to a large extent these paintings are simply and extension of those evenings watching what the philosopher Roland Barthes called the 'spectacle of excess.'
Pro Wrestling matches are not sporting events, they are essentially morality plays. The point is not who wins but the articulation and display of emotions in the most visually sensual terms.
I am interested in visual drama and the amplification of emotion through gesture. Faulkner talked about trying to capture, in his writing, the gesture of the heart's dilemma. What can I tell you, I think he had a point and all these paintings are my attempt to display those gestures under the bright ring lights.
