Johanna Keefe is an artist living and working in Augusta, Georgia. Johanna uses sculpture, photography, and the history of trade to create a visual conversation about abuse and desire. Exploring the similarities between contemporary art and historical luxury goods she distorts imagined value within southern culture and art. Her artworks focus in on the structures of trade routes and trade goods from Europe to the American South from the 17th century to present day. From their design, in the materials and creation, through production, and within delivery methods, the Southern implementation of brutality and hard power has been coded into art and decorative vessels as an imagery of success and wealth. Johanna creates visual narratives that navigate the visual language and impact of this brutality through an investigation of Southern object-hood, image making, and beauty.
