Artist Statement Submitted 2020“Home” is a documentation of the shifting landscape of upstate South Carolina during the COVID-19 pandemic. The universal transference to operating fully through digital means during this pandemic has evoked a desire to portray the genuine human experience. As a tactile and deliberate medium, the use of film in this work coincided with the opportunity to slow down and observe the journey in the wake of a digital surge.
I have occupied each of the cities documented at various points in my own life, calling them home. As the work progressed, I gathered stories from any who would offer a taste of their own experience along the way. Displacement, homelessness, mental health, fear, and glimpses of hope are addressed throughout. Here, I present a compilation of the shifting dynamic of the household, the concept of security and safety, and our individual definitions of freedom.
