Artist Statement Submitted 2017My artwork often borrows from both real and fictional narratives to illustrate themes of death, resurrection, and identity. Characters stumble towards hope in the midst of brokenness. Death is usually used as a positive symbol to foreshadow rebirth. Often pieces acknowledge the desperation and pain of mental health struggles, as well as with the simplicity that comes with a stripping away of everything that is non-essential.
I am repeatedly drawn to the sacred metaphors from my childhood, but do not wish to create work that necessitates spiritual interpretation. Drawing from childhood roots of divine and mystical imagery, I wish to create what is universally accessible and inclusive. My aim isn't art for art's sake, but to somehow develop an image into a contributor to hope.
