Artist Statement Submitted 2018
My performance work centers on struggle, trauma, and healing, as well as the stories tied to these experiences, as a way to create space for conversation, education, empathy, and growth. Drawing on personal narratives, collected stories, literature, and social movements, I have built a body of work which explores the complicated spaces, both personal and public, that people move through in their day to day lives. I want to challenge people who don’t know very much about these facets of life and to open up those who do know them intimately. I want these people to interact closely. Through intense vulnerability, a willingness to push my own body, and work that confronts others, I hope to reach places that are not as easily accessed and often broken. Here we can learn, move forward, heal, and become resilient.
