Artist Statement Submitted 2017My love of the South, my roots, people I have known and their stories have drawn me to document the unique, cultural landscape of the Black Belt region of Alabama.
I was born and raised in Selma, Alabama, a small town no different from many throughout the rural South. Many things have changed since 1965, but now I find us back in the midst of a time of doubt, conflicting ideologies on the economy and politics, and the resurfacing of hate.
I am now documenting the new look of this region. A reflection of these present-day views and attitudes. My experiences have been positive and one of hope. The people I have met have shown me kindness and respect, and showed that we can all coexist despite our feelings of distrust.
I have sought to convey this reality as I see it and the emotions that accompany it.
