Jeffrey Dodge

Artist Statement Submitted 2014

My work arrives through the process of painting, overprinting and integrating gathered images into metaphorical icons of landscape and natural objects. The gathered and painted images create a departure point for a new dialogue and a change in the overall landscape construct. Abstract shapes curtain and bring cohesion to the multi-layered images flattening and fostering mystery and tension. The process of collectiveness, the generosity of found surprises and the impetus to combine paint, gathered images and abstract shapes informs and creates a contemporary landscape view.
The resulting work references a desire for meaning and awareness, a contemplation of space and time and the tenuous relationship between humans and the natural environment full of labyrinths and unexpected intersections.
