Jane Ingram Allen

Artist Statement Submitted 2017

My art installations are created at a specific place and time to focus attention on the unique qualities of that place. Many of my works are map-based, and I call them “Site Maps”, a record of my experience of a particular place and time. I begin each site map by collecting local plant materials and creating handmade paper unique to each place. Each site map Is composed of multiple sheets of my plant fiber handmade paper joined with natural fiber string. I use mixed media acrylic painting and collage to create the two-sided suspended installations. My outdoor installations are made with natural materials and seeds and are meant to change over time, working with nature as a partner to produce living artworks. Growing up in the South around seamstresses, quilters, gardeners, and farmers, I learned to love nature and making things “from scratch” as well as “making something from nothing”. My art reconstructs those experiences and shares those connections.
