James Morris

Artist Statement Submitted 2015

I've traveled many, many backroads and byways of the regional South. It's been exciting to have found and photographed so many images that depict the countryside and culture of the South. The beauty of seasonal southern landscapes and the dramatic designs and patterns created by nature continue to excite me when I come upon them. The folksy humor and whimsy found and captured in hand-painted names/signs, along with roadside "art" and discards are important as a preservation of the culture. Returning to previously visited sites has made me keenly aware of the significant changes and/or disappearance caused by weather, urban growth, and other environmental factors.
