Artist Statement Submitted 2020
I am a watercolorist from Athens, Georgia. Most of my creative work pays homage to the south through portraiture. I have had several solo exhibitions paying tribute to the people of Athens and am presently working on a traveling exhibition celebrating Georgia and its legendary musicians. Not originally from the south, I am deeply enamored with Georgia and its music scene. Regardless of genre, there is something special about the music here. This celebration of Georgia music has become an all consuming, multi-year passion of mine; it takes time and tenacity to get through management of these legendary musicians, to schedule photo shoots and to paint each painting. Bands being represented include the Indigo Girls, The Freedom Singers, Drive-By Truckers, Widespread Panic, Outkast, Pylon, R.E.M., and the Rolling Stones. The 1858 prize would not only be an honor to receive but would be an important contributor to this project’s success.
