Ion Yamazaki

Artist Statement Submitted 2015

My current artistic practice represents momentary excitements in the futile nature of the capitalistic society. I incorporate interactive performance and installation to let the audience participate physically to provide instant entry points to my concept. And also I utilize those elements to criticize and affirm capitalism simultaneously and imply our adaptation to its structure. For the same purpose, I use everyday materials that are widely available in huge franchises such as, Wal-Mart, Home Depot, Target,, etc., to have a direct connection to our consumer culture. Living in the capitalistic society is full of futility since everything seems to be globalized, standardized and commodified, and nothing seems to be real. However, no matter how small, peripheral, or fake the moment of excitement is, I cherish it because that is when I feel I am alive.
