Artist Statement Submitted 2019I am a fine art photographer inspired by my southern roots, motherhood, womanhood and a whimsical imagination I relied on as an only child in a rural town. I am drawn to the subject matter of family and have used the family narrative in my last few series.
After the birth of my daughter I started creating images to express the emotions of motherhood. However, these images did not include her. As she grew into a force of nature all her own, I was drawn to pull her into my world of conceptual art and explore our relationship.
Seen Not Heard, the work you see here, takes its title from the old adage often thrown about in reference to the desired behavior of children. These images explore the cycles that are passed down through generations and the tension between keeping to what is known and forging a newer, and perhaps stronger, path. As strong as the close, forever bond between mother and daughter is, there also exists a distance inherent between two different individuals.
