Artist Statement Submitted 2015
Since 2002 my paintings have focused on experiences with particular people. The experiences cause what a friend describes as a “whole-body-pleasure.” They are moments where time slows and I feel a great stillness. These moments where I feel this deep connection to the world are very rare, so I use the act of painting to break these moments down into manageable parts and concentrate on them in hopes of figuring out what was it about that moment that was so magical. Since each painting is based on a specific experience with a particular friend or family member, each painting tends to have its own sets of parameters and challenges. I use painting to focus on an experience and to wrap myself in the moment. By building the experience I begin to understand what about the moment moved me to paint in the first place.
