Artist Statement Submitted 2020
I work across disciplines exploring contemporary notions of identity and the self through likeness and difference. Using photographs as a point of departure I make composite drawings and painting that straddle the line between real and representation. Although, the images might look like a particular person they never represent him or her in a illustrative way, but often suggest another realness or humanity that the photograph might lack. This realness as I like to refer to it is a kind of aura that Walter Benjamin describes as being lost as a result of mechanical reproduction. Although the camera and more recently the computer has had an effect on how we see and interpret the world I believe it is the artist role to acknowledge and use those devices while maintaining a kind of primal stance in opposition to those delivery systems. I collect images from the internet and street encounters.
