Artist Statement Submitted 2018I am an interdisciplinary artist and scholar whose works combine observations on hip-hop, fine art and popular culture. My paintings, performance art, and academic work addresses concerns around contemporary representations of Black masculinity and how these images impact both the reading and performance of Black masculinity.
I recently received my Ph.D. from Emory University where my scholarly interests and creative practice combined. Utilizing my own position as a Black male, my work explores the myriad ways Black male identity both confronts and conforms to broader social meanings and practices.
In 2017 I was the subject of a retrospective exhibition "Miroirs de l'Homme" in Paris, France. I am also a recipient of the 2016 Joan Mitchell Foundation "Painters and Sculptors" Award.
