Diane Arrieta

Artist Statement Submitted 2017

The work of Birds are Nice is fueled by a lifetime kinship for animals and environmental stewardship. It is embedded with animal symbolism. The animals serves as a social commentary on humanity. With rapid depletion of species, and rise in technology and the unnatural world; animal symbolism gives us a link to the past, our sense of place, and helps fulfill the need to nourish ourselves with nature.

The graphic style and bold color pallet used is characteristic of the comic book genre. The work serves as a voice for the environment and societal ills, without being directly edifying. In today’s global society, what happens in one part of the world affects us all. Mitigating the damage to the planet and standing up for to the downtrodden can no longer be seen merely as an academic discussion.
