Artist Statement Submitted 2020

This series of photomontages entitled The Hunt Collages is set in the landscape of the 19th century American South and explores through historical fiction both secular and Biblical narratives of the rituals of the hunt. Based on the Unicorn Tapestries of the late Middle Ages, these pieces use pagan and Christian symbolism to tell their mystical stories.

In creating these photomontages I digitally combine elements from historic images with selected pieces from my own photography. Each collage contains approximately one hundred layers which are sized, blended, and merged into a single, large scale image printed onto aluminum.

These photomontages, created from three centuries of photography, explore the enduring traditions of the hunt and the meanings behind them in this mysterious region whose present is as peculiar and as haunted as its past.
